Do I Need Therapy?

If you’ve ever thought about starting therapy but then followed up with: “My problems aren’t big enough.” Or “I should be able to handle this on my own.” Listen up.

Let me start off by saying, there is no single “right” reason to start therapy. One of the biggest misconceptions about therapy is that you have to be in crisis before you deserve support. The reality is that therapy isn't just for major life events. It's also for managing everyday stress, navigating anxiety, improving relationships, and feeling more like yourself again.

Wondering if you should try therapy? Here are a few signs that therapy may be helpful. You don't have to check every box, but if one or two of these resonate with you, it may be worth exploring.

You’re constantly overthinking
You replay conversations, worry about future situations, second-guess your decisions, or struggle to quiet your thoughts at the end of the day. When your brain rarely gets a break, it's easy to feel mentally exhausted.

Stress feels like your default setting
Life has busy seasons, but, if you feel like you're always operating in survival mode, therapy can help you learn ways to manage stress before it starts affecting your health, relationships, or quality of life.

You feel emotionally and/or mentally drained
Sometimes people assume they shouldn't feel this exhausted because everything looks fine on paper, but constantly carrying anxiety, pressure, or emotional responsibility can be incredibly draining. You don't have to wait until you're burnt out before seeking help.

You’re always taking care of everyone else
If you're the person everyone leans on, you may not have many places where you get to process your own emotions and experiences. Therapy gives you a space where you don't have to be the strong one. Instead, you get to focus on your own needs, experiences, and personal growth.

Anxiety is interfering with everyday life
Maybe you avoid certain situations, struggle to relax, have difficulty sleeping, constantly expect the worst, or feel like your mind is always racing. You don't have to wait until anxiety becomes debilitating before addressing it.

You keep repeating the same patterns
Maybe it’s difficulty setting boundaries, constant second-guessing, perfectionism, or shutting down when things get hard. If you notice yourself repeating patterns you'd like to change, therapy can help you understand why they happen and how to approach them differently.

You’re going through a life change
Not every change is negative. Starting a new job, becoming a parent, getting married, moving, graduating, changing careers, or entering a new stage of life can all bring unexpected stress and uncertainty. Therapy can help you navigate change with greater confidence.

You want to understand yourself better
Sometimes there’s no specific problem to solve. You simply want to understand your emotions, identify your values, improve your self-awareness, or become the healthiest version of yourself. That’s a worthwhile reason to start therapy too.

Ultimately, you don't have to wait until you're in crisis to benefit from therapy. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, struggling to manage everyday stress, navigating a life transition, or simply wanting to understand yourself better, therapy can provide a supportive space to build insight, develop healthy coping skills, and improve your overall well-being. Taking care of your mental health may be one of the most valuable investments you make.
